The 'Face Mapper' AI Photobooth Variant has recently caught our attention. At first glance, the output from these booths seems impeccable. The image details are consistent and nearly flawless. Yet, a closer look reveals a caveat.

• The Upsides

The Face Mapper's appeal lies in its ability to meticulously curate output images. It ensures an exact reproduction of the base image. This precision seems promising initially and contributes to an excellent visual outcome.

• The Downside

However, this seemingly perfect output masks a significant limitation. The base images used for the face swap process are pre-composed, not generated in real-time. Consequently, the range of outputs remains confined and repetitive. Each guest's unique output ends up resembling everyone else's. This contradicts the essence of personalised experiences that AI booths aim to deliver.

This limitation narrows the scope, restricting image outputs to androgynous bodies and head-and-shoulders poses. Unless opting for comical outputs.

In essence, the 'Face Mapper' falls short of offering a genuine generative AI experience. Instead, it leans toward advanced photoshopping. This is a perfectly valid AI tool. However, it lacks the diversity and uniqueness expected from AI-driven creative processes.

The 'Face Mapper's' limitations can undermine the value of the AI Photo booth experience for users seeking truly personalised and diverse outputs.

We love an AI background remover photo booth!

The AI greenscreen is no longer limited by a single colour backdrop and perfect lighting. It can keep a person and remove all the surrounding background images. This is ready to craft an image out of this world.

We’ve used this concept with a project earlier in 2023 - for sneak peak into the execution take a look here. This specific example was in a semi-outdoor area with uncontrolled light. It worked surprisingly well!

It’s important to match the right technological solution to the creative output. This, like the face mapper, has its uses.

But - to call it an AI Photo booth would be a stretch.

This is what an AI photo booth is all about.

The image is fully generated with the brand/activation parameters. However, it also includes elements of the user. NOT just their face. This is key.

The image is then created with the user’s likeness.

We’ve seen some great examples of these, and we’ve been privileged to have delivered a few ourselves. The proof is in the pudding, and the second best way to validate this is through case studies, which you can find  here.

• The Upsides

The outputs created through full generative AI can be mind blowing. The results will surprise and delight. They will generate unique outputs, just as the individual subject. This is the gold standard of AI Image generation - but it does not come easy.

• The Downsides

These require a lot more testing to get right.  A LOT MORE. Creating the parameter for generating fantastic images is not always straightforward. The system must balance constraints to deliver consistent brand outputs.

Testing with users of different ethnicities, shapes, and sizes is required. This ensures no bias in the prompts and outputs. And then  delivering that at scale is another.

Consistency of outputs for your subject is harder to get right. But with that comes a valuable payoff. It leads to higher engagement and value.
